Went from hauling every fridge outside to test it to doing the amp draw right at the outlet, and I feel like a rookie again
I used to pull every refrigerator out to the driveway before I even hooked up my gauges. Dragging a 300 pound box across a garage floor by myself for years, scratching up floors and tweaking my back, all because the old guy I trained under in Fresno swore you could not get a real read inside a hot garage. About six months ago a tech on a call showed me he just clips his meter on the compressor common wire and watches amp draw while the unit runs right where it sits. I tried it on a Whirlpool side by side last Tuesday, garage was about 95 degrees, and the numbers lined up almost perfect with what I would have seen outside. Now I only pull a unit when I actually have to open the sealed system, which saved me an easy two hours that day. My question is whether the high ambient heat ever fakes you out on a weak compressor diagnosis, or am I overthinking it.
