Counted 1,847 stumps ground in my 20th season and found the first one I ever did, still there
Drove past the Andersons' place on Route 9 yesterday and that old maple stump from my first summer is still poking out of the dirt, just softer now. What's the oldest job you've driven past that you're still not sure you finished right?
Hold up, if the stump is still poking out of the dirt then it didn't really get ground out, right? When you grind a stump right it turns into a pile of chips and dust and you can rake it out and fill the hole, nothing left sticking up a few months later. That maple must have been one of those shallow jobs where you cut the top off and called it done, or the wheel never got down past grade. Twenty seasons in you know the deal, stumps that got done right don't come back to visit you on Route 9.
