That chipper feed trick I heard from a logger in Oregon

Stopped for coffee near Eugene and this old-timer said he runs his chipper at 80% throttle and feeds branches butt-first when they're over 4 inches. Tried it on a maples job this week, cuts way down on kickback. Any of you guys do something similar or is it just a West Coast thing?
