Using a throw line to set my climbing line saved me 20 minutes on a white oak last week
I used to just muscle my way up with spikes and a flip line on everything, but this old timer in Eugene showed me how to isolate a crotch with a throw bag and it changed my whole approach. Took me a few tries to get the weight over the right limb, maybe 6 or 7 throws, but once it was set I was up and tied in way faster than fighting the bark. Anyone else here use throw lines on rough bark trees or do you just free climb when the canopy looks easy?
Spikes and a flip line are for removal jobs, not climbing to prune. If you were spiking up a white oak just to get into the canopy you were poking holes in a tree you were probably trying to keep alive. That old timer did you a real favor. Throw line on rough bark like white oak is actually easier than on smooth stuff because the bag grabs instead of sliding back down. Six or seven throws is normal when you're learning, wait until you get it in two.
