Just lost $75 to a fake wire fee scam

Got an email last week that looked exactly like my bank's, saying I needed to pay a $75 fee to receive a wire transfer. It had the logo and everything. I was in a rush and just clicked the link and paid. Called the bank today to check on the transfer and they had no record of it. The email was a total fake. I feel so dumb for not checking the sender address first. Has anyone else seen these fake fee emails getting better lately?

Just passed my 500th hour on the bottom in Lake Michigan

Last month I was on a job near Milwaukee, fixing a water intake line. The current was rough, maybe 2 knots. My supervisor, Dave, told me to just take my time and work with it, not against it. Ended up getting the flange seated right on the first try. Anyone else find that some days you just click with the conditions?

My writing prompt totally backfired at a workshop last month

I was at a local writer's group in Seattle, feeling pretty good about my prompt idea: 'You find a key that unlocks any door, but each time you use it, you forget one memory.' I thought it was deep. I read it out loud and got total silence, then this guy named Mark just said, 'So, like, Alzheimer's but magical?' The whole room got super awkward. I tried to save it by saying it was about choice and cost, but the mood was gone. We ended up just doing a basic 'describe a rainy day' prompt instead. It really threw off the whole session. Has anyone else had a prompt idea land that badly, and how did you bounce back?

Rant: I dropped $150 on a 'viral' audio filter for my videos and now I feel silly

So I kept seeing this one sound filter everywhere, the one that makes your voice sound super clear and kind of like a podcast host. Everyone was using it for their short videos, saying it was a must-have. I figured if I wanted my content to look pro, I needed it. I bought the whole pack for about $150, thinking it was an investment. I used it on a few videos, and yeah, my voice sounded a bit better, but then the trend just... died. Like, two months later, nobody is using that sound anymore. Now I'm stuck with this expensive filter pack I never touch, and my old free software does almost the same thing. It really makes me wonder if buying into these quick trends is ever worth it. Has anyone else bought a tool for a trend that just vanished?

Serious question, has anyone else had a writing prompt completely derail a project? My 'good day' turned into a lost week.

The prompt was simple. 'Write about a character who finds a key that doesn't fit any lock.' Sounded fun. I started a short story. Then the character, a locksmith named Mara, found the key was warm. Then it hummed. By day three, I had 15 pages about a trans-dimensional artifact and a secret society of metalworkers. Totally lost the original, simple mystery. Spent the next four days trying to wrangle it back. Couldn't. Had to scrap 8,000 words. Felt like building a deck and accidentally framing a whole house. Anyone have a trick for when a prompt spirals like that? Do you lean into it or force a hard reset?

My professor in Sedimentology 101 kept saying 'sandstone is just old beach', but that's only true for some of it.

I finally understood the difference after a field trip to the Navajo Sandstone outcrops near Moab, where seeing the massive cross-beds made it clear this was a desert dune system, not a shoreline deposit.

I was convinced my grandma's pickle recipe needed sugar, but her old notes from 1972 proved me wrong

She just used salt, water, and dill, and after a week they were the best I've ever had. Has anyone else had a family recipe surprise them like that?

I had to choose between a full removal and a risky crown reduction on a huge oak

The client in Springfield wanted to keep their 80-foot pin oak, but it was hitting power lines and the house. I could either take it down completely for $2,500 or try a major reduction. I went with the reduction, taking off about 30% of the canopy over two days. It's holding up a year later, but I still check on it every time I'm in that neighborhood. Has anyone else had a big tree where a reduction actually worked long-term?

Switched from a standard bucket to a tall one for my hydrangeas

The blooms used to droop over the edge and get crushed, but the extra 6 inches of height keeps them upright and perfect. Anyone have a good source for those tall black buckets in bulk?

Appreciation post: I finally stopped skipping the thermal paste check on every repair

I was swapping a CPU for a client in Phoenix last week and the system kept shutting down, so I pulled the cooler and found the old paste was basically dust. My boss said, 'You can't trust a paste you didn't put there yourself,' and now I check it every single time, even on quick fixes. How many of you make that a standard step in your initial look over?
