Vent: guy at the supply yard said 'just top it and walk away' about a cracked codominant union
I was picking up bar oil at the shop off Route 9 in Clifton Park and overheard a guy tell a new hire that a cracked union on a 40 foot silver maple is fine to just cable and forget. That is how you get a 2am call when half the tree lands on somebody's truck, and I have seen it twice in 5 years. Cabling is not a fix, it buys you time while you decide on removal or a real reduction prune. Am I the only one who thinks we should be telling new guys to walk the whole tree before they even touch a saw?
40 foot silver maple with a cracked codominant union and he says just cable it and forget it? That's not a fix, that's a lawsuit waiting to happen. Cable doesn't heal the wood, it just holds things together till the next big wind decides otherwise. Whole tree walk first, every time.
