Heard a curator say something about looted artifacts that stopped me cold

At a talk last Tuesday in Denver, a museum curator mentioned 40% of displayed items in smaller collections are unverified provenance, and she's seen fakes pass through three institutions. Made me rethink every 'authentic' relic I've bid on at estate sales, has anyone else checked their pieces against the ICOM database?

And that's the thing, once you start digging into the ICOM database you realize how many pieces just... vanish from the records. I checked a couple of items I got years ago from a local auction, and one had a gap in its history that made me feel sick. Honestly, the fakes are the easy part to spot, it's the ones with just enough paperwork to look real that scare me.
