Unpopular opinion: that 2018 Pompeii horse find got more hype than the whole street of shops next to it
I spent a week in Naples back in March and hit the site with a grad student who works the Regio V trench. She walked me past the stable where they pulled that harnessed horse out in 2018, and honestly the crowd around it was double the one at the row of shops with the fresco of Priapus. Her take was that the flashy single finds pull funding and the boring block by block stuff gets left half dug. So which is it, do big headline finds actually help the field, or do they just pull money and eyes away from the slow work?
