Was helping catalog finds at a dig site in New Mexico last summer... an older volunteer pointed at a plain-looking stone and said 'That's not a rock, that's a tool someone held 800 years ago.'

My buddy found a weird lump of clay in his backyard. Turned out to be a piece of a really old pipe. Makes you wonder what's just sitting there, right?

Notice how the most ordinary things often hide the coolest stories.

Oh man, that's so true! A friend of mine bought a beat-up old dresser at a yard sale for like twenty bucks. When he got it home, he found a bunch of love letters from the 1940s tucked behind a drawer. The whole story of some soldier and his girl was right there. It's exactly what you're saying, @seth683, the most plain stuff can have this whole hidden life. He tried to find the family to return them but never could. Still gives me chills thinking about it.
