Just came back from Mauna Kea, the visitor center photos don't do it justice

I saw tons of posts here raving about the summit shots from Mauna Kea, but nobody talks about the view from the visitor center at 9,200 feet. I went last week and the Milky Way was so bright it cast shadows. Sure, the summit gets the telescope shots and the famous sunset pics, but the lower elevation gave me a wider horizon and actually clearer air that night. Am I the only one who thinks the best photos come from off the beaten path? What spots do you all skip that turn out better than the obvious ones?
