My uncle said to always start with the moon, but my first try at Jupiter was a blurry mess.
He told me, 'Get your focus right on the moon first, then swing over,' but I didn't listen and just pointed at Jupiter right away. Anyone have a better method for getting sharp planet shots with a basic DSLR?

Linda's live view trick is solid, but you can fry your sensor if you point at the sun by mistake. I always start on a bright star like Vega to get focus locked in first.

Honestly, your uncle's advice is outdated. Starting on the moon wastes time. It's a bright, easy target, but planets need totally different settings. Jupiter is dimmer, so your focus and exposure are way off when you swing over. I just go straight for the planet, use live view zoomed all the way in on a star or Jupiter itself, and tweak the focus ring until it's a tiny sharp point. Got my best shots that way, no moon needed.
