PSA: check your old astrophotos before you post them in a 'first vs latest' comparison
I pulled up my very first Orion shot from my backyard in Bakersfield, taken back in January 2019 on a stock DSLR, and compared it to one I shot two weeks ago with the same lens and camera. The difference is not my skill. My 2019 frame shows maybe 40 stars in the whole sword area, and the new one shows closer to 300, but the big change is sky glow. My neighbor put up two LED floodlights on his garage in 2021, and I've been shooting through that glow ever since without noticing. The old photo looks dark and clean, and the new one looks washed out even though the tracking is way better. The real culprit was me leaving my UV/IR cut filter off for the last three sessions, which smeared the faint stuff I thought I was catching. If you're doing a before and after, shoot a test frame with and without every filter you own first, or you'll blame your gear for something a piece of glass did. What's the dumbest thing you've found that quietly wrecked a comparison?
