Question about stacking moon shots, a guy at the observatory in Tucson talked me out of it
Last month I drove out to the Kitt Peak area with my 8 inch Dob and a cheap DSLR adapter, all fired up to stack about 800 frames of the moon for a super sharp shot. An older guy at the visitor center looked at my setup and asked why I was stacking the moon when the atmosphere in southern Arizona was calm enough that 40 good frames would do the job. I pushed back at first, but he pulled up two of his own shots on a laptop, one from 900 frames and one from 35, and I honestly could not pick the stacked one out of the lineup. Now I am second guessing all the hours I burn on capture and processing when the sky itself might be the bigger factor. Has anyone here compared a small frame count against a huge stack on the same night and seen a real difference?
