The night in March my $80 used telescope beat my neighbor's setup on the Ring Nebula
Last March I spent a Friday night in my backyard in Tucson with a used Orion XT6 I got for $80 off a guy on Craigslist. The seeing was the best I can remember, dead still air, and I could push the little scope to 240x on the Ring Nebula without it turning to mush. My neighbor dragged his fancy 10 inch rig over around 10pm, and after an hour of him fiddling with collimation he finally looked through mine and just went quiet. I shot 40 subs at 8 seconds each with my phone held to the eyepiece, stacked the best 25, and got a clean little smoke ring with the central star peeking through. It was the first time a stack actually matched what I saw with my eye. Do any of you still shoot through the eyepiece with a phone, or is that just a beginner habit?
