Vent: my paint booth timer died mid-clearcoat and I did not notice

Last Tuesday I was laying down a final clear on a customer's pearl white truck and the booth timer quit after 12 minutes. I only caught it because the solvent smell was still strong when I opened the door, so I had to sand that panel down and redo it. Cost me 3 extra hours and a new $90 timer, anyone else run into a silent failure like this and how do you check for it?

...and that reminds me, my buddy had a similar thing happen but with his booth heater last winter. He thought the clear was curing fine because the temp gauge read okay, but the fan was dead. Whole job came out soft and he had to strip it the next day. He ended up putting one of those little plug-in timers that beeps loud on the booth outlet, the kind people use for Christmas lights. It's not fancy but it's cheap and you can hear it from the other room.
