Old shop trick for stuck rotors backfired on me during a roadside brake job in Tucson

I was helping a buddy swap brakes on his F-150 last month in a parking lot off Speedway. Heard the old trick about using the spare tire to knock a stuck rotor loose, so I gave it a few whacks. Worked fine, but then the rotor warped from the heat and the pad seating got messed up. Now I'm torn between sticking with the hammer method for quick jobs or taking the extra time to pull the caliper bracket and use a puller. Anyone else had a shortcut blow up on them like this, and did you go back to doing it the slow way?
