Showerthought: the car wash on 5th has guys drying cars with old bath towels

I stopped by that hand wash spot on 5th street in Boise last Saturday and watched three dudes dry a brand new Tesla with what looked like retired bathroom towels. Those towels are dragging tiny grit across the clear coat, which is basically wet sanding your paint for free. Why do people pay $30 for a wash and then let some guy scratch up the whole car with a crusty rag?
