Took 3 weekends to figure out why my dash cam kept dying overnight
My dash cam kept shutting off every morning and I figured the camera was junk, so I almost bought a new one for $180. Turned out the hardwire kit I put in last fall was tapped into a fuse that stays live when the car is off, so it was draining my battery down to 11.8 volts by sunrise. I chased it with a $22 multimeter from Harbor Freight, checked every fuse in the panel twice, and finally found it by watching the voltage drop with the car parked in my driveway for 20 minutes. Three weekends gone over a fuse slot that was labeled wrong in the owner's manual. Anyone else run into a hardwire kit that just will not play nice with a car that shuts off its own accessories?
Feel for you on this one, three weekends stings. I went through almost the same thing with a kit in my truck, except mine was killing the battery in like two days instead of overnight. What got me was the fuse tap itself, it was loose in the slot so half the time it wasn't even making good contact, and the weird readings made me think the camera was bad too. Checking voltage with the car parked is the way to do it, nobody tells you that part. Manuals being wrong about fuse slots is way more common than it should be, I don't trust those little diagrams anymore without testing each one myself.
