My uncle's 20 year old advice about open trailers was spot on
Back in 2008 my uncle swore never to use an open carrier for anything longer than a weekend drive, said rock chips and road grime would wreck a finish in 500 miles. I laughed it off and shipped my 67 Mustang from Dallas to Phoenix on an open trailer to save $180. It came back with three chips on the hood and a cracked windshield, the driver said it was normal wear. He was right all along, and now I always add the $250 for enclosed even on cheap cars. Anyone else learn this lesson the hard way or did I just get unlucky with the route?
normal wear" is such a joke, they act like a cracked windshield just happens on its own. I shipped a Civic on an open trailer once and got a hood full of chips plus a nice layer of road grit baked into the paint, took forever to buff out. That $250 is worth every penny, way cheaper than a repaint.
