Can we talk about how much of a wire's current rating is just about heat?

I always sized wires by the chart in the back of AC 43.13 until an old bench guy in Tulsa showed me a 22 AWG wire carrying 7 amps with good airflow that never even got warm. So how much do you all actually derate for bundled runs in a hot avionics bay?
