Pricey heat protectant actually worked, I doubted it hard

Been doing hair for 8 years in Tampa. Always used the cheap spray from the beauty supply. Last month a client insisted I try her $38 bottle. Figured it was hype. But it stopped my usual split ends after blowouts. My regular stuff left damage on long blonde hair. This one didn't. I'm not switching everything I own, just that product. Anyone else shell out big money and get surprised?

Warning: That cheap SATA cable cost me a full server rebuild in Portland

Last Tuesday I swapped a failing drive in a client's NAS and used a $3 cable from a bulk bin, figured it was fine since it clicked in. Three days later the array dropped a disk and the whole box wouldn't boot, turned out the cable had a pin that was slightly bent and it fried the backplane connector. Cost me 6 hours of recovery time and a $180 replacement board to fix what a $12 quality cable would have prevented. Anyone else had a cheap cable cause way more damage than the savings were worth?

Rain ruined my tent floor in Yosemite, need a better groundsheet plan

Last Tuesday I camped near the Merced River and woke up to 3 inches of water pooled under my tent floor, my sleeping bag was soaked because I skimped on a footprint. The tent itself was fine, but the cheap tarp I used let water seep through the seams and it took me 4 hours to dry everything out the next day. Has anyone else had luck with those polycryo sheets instead of heavy footprints, or should I just bite the bullet and get a proper Tyvek ground cloth?

That screenshot of a city council member's burner account went around my Boise Facebook group last Tuesday. I spent 6 hours digging through old posts and cached pages to prove it was fake, turns out it was real and the original thread had 400 replies calling him out. The best part was a comment from someone who claimed to be his ex-neighbor with a story about his lawn flamingos. Anyone else ever waste a whole evening fact-checking something that ended up being true?

I chose a $0 off-camera flash over a $500 studio rig, got a better shot

Last month I had a paid portrait gig in Austin and my main light died an hour before the client showed up. I had two options: rent a studio strobe for $120 or rig my old speedlight onto a broken tripod with a bedsheet as a diffuser. I went with the cheap rig because I was out of cash and honestly scared the rental place would be slow. The client loved the softer shadows and even asked what modifier I used, I told her it was a $9 sheet from Target. Now I'm wondering if anyone else has ever downgraded their gear on purpose and gotten better results, or am I the only one who ditched professional kit for junk?

Pro tip: leveling compound needs way more water than the bag says

Spent a whole Saturday in my Edmonton basement fighting a self-leveling pour that kept cratering, turns out my bag mix was too dry from storing it in the garage all winter. Warning: Don't let your framers skip the shear wall nailing pattern

I walked a house last week where the framers had nailed the shear walls every 12 inches instead of every 6 like the plans said. The engineer caught it during his inspection and made them pull out every other nail and redo the whole thing. That cost the homeowner an extra $2,800 in labor and materials to fix. Has anyone else had their builder try to shortcut structural details like this?
