My lead tech kept telling me to stop trusting the built-in test on the LRU, and after chasing a bad flag on a CRJ for 6 hours I finally get it
I used to run the built-in test, see all good, and sign it off, but he made me pull the connector and ring out every pin by hand on a unit last month in Wichita. Found a backed-out pin that the BITE never caught, and now the Fluke comes out before I trust a green light. Anyone else had a built-in test lie to them like that?
How many of us have signed off on a green light and then had it bite us later? I know I have, more than once, and I still feel like a rookie every time it happens. Last year I had a BITE pass on a fuel qty unit and I turned it loose, only for the crew to write it up two legs later. My old shop lead used to say a built in test only checks what the box wants you to check, not what the wire is actually doing. Now I keep a Fluke in my bag and pull the connector even when the test says good, because a backed out pin does not care what the screen tells you.
