Built a pallet compost bin for $12 and the free cardboard layer did more than I expected
I threw together a compost bin last month out of three pallets I grabbed off a curb in Boise, total cost was 12 bucks for brackets. I lined the bottom with a bunch of Amazon boxes my neighbor was tossing, figuring it would just break down slowly and kill weeds underneath. Three weeks later the whole pile is cooking at like 140 degrees and the cardboard vanished, but the best part is the squash vine borers stopped showing up because they can't get through the buried flaps. Lesson learned, free browns beat the $30 bag of shredded paper I used to buy. Anyone else burying cardboard under their bins, or am I late to this one?
Ha! You are not late, you are just smarter than me. I did the same thing with pizza boxes from Costco last fall and yeah, that pile got HOT fast. Cardboard just soaks up all that juice and the worms go nuts over it. Half my neighbors think I'm nuts for saving boxes but let them keep buying that bagged stuff.
