Finally got my raised beds level after 3 tries

Spent last Sunday afternoon shimming the frames with scrap cedar shims from the hardware store in Denton. The southwest corner was off by nearly 2 inches, but now everything sits flat and the drip line actually runs evenly. Anyone else spend way too long getting beds perfectly level?

Swapped my bagged soil for homemade compost and won't go back

I spent like 60 bucks last spring on those big bags of garden soil from the hardware store. My tomatoes looked okay but nothing special. Then my buddy in Phoenix told me he just piles up his kitchen scraps and leaves in a corner of his yard and lets it rot for 6 months. I tried it with a cheap bin from Amazon and after about 4 months I had this dark crumbly stuff that smelled like earth. I put it around my peppers this year and they are twice as big as last season. The bagged stuff always had these weird chunks and felt dry fast. Homemade compost holds water way better and my plants look greener. Has anyone else made the switch and noticed a big difference in their veggie beds?

The bottom boards rotted out by fall because they used super thin material. I could have built twice as many beds for that money using rough lumber from the local yard. Has anyone else had better luck with a specific brand or just stick to building from scratch?

Neighbor gave me a 30 year old trowel and it changed my concrete game

My neighbor Art, this retired mason who's like 80 something, saw me fighting with a bag of quickcrete in my driveway last Saturday and just walked over. He didn't say much, just handed me this beat up old finishing trowel with a wooden handle that's all smooth from years of use. I was using this cheap 12 dollar thing from the home center that kept flexing weird. He told me to lay off the water and just work it slow, let the cream come up natural. I followed what he said and the slab I poured for my grill pad came out flat and smooth on the first try. Never had a pour look that clean before. Got me wondering if anyone else has gotten a random tool handed down from a neighbor that just worked way better than anything new?

My neighbor Bob was right about paver base after all

He kept telling me I needed 6 inches of crushed stone for my 10x12 patio but I thought 3 would be fine since it was just for walking on. I looked it up after and found out dandelion roots pull nutrients from deep in the soil that regular plants can't reach. So for the last 6 months I've been tossing dandelions from my lawn into the compost pile and my tomatoes are noticeably bigger. Should I stain my fence solid or semi-transparent? Can't decide...

Last month I stained half my backyard fence near the oak tree with a solid stain from Sherwin-Williams, and the other half with a semi-transparent. The solid side looks great right now but I'm worried about peeling down the road, while the semi side is already fading after just 4 weeks. Has anyone tried both long term and regretted one over the other?

Warning: Built a trellis out of treated pine and it warped in 3 months

That trellis looked great when I finished it in June, but by September the 2x4s were twisting like crazy. Had to tear the whole thing down and rebuild using cedar instead. Has anyone else dealt with treated lumber failing on a garden structure?

Back in 2019 I had this wire bin setup in the corner of the yard. Worked fine for a couple years. Then we got that record rain in Portland that April and May. Everything turned into a wet, slimy mess that attracted raccoons every single night. I spent $60 on a tumbler style bin from a guy on Craigslist. Never looked back. Way easier to turn and the drainage is actually built in. Anyone else switch bins after a bad season messed up their setup?

I was walking through the old part of town yesterday and saw a house with the coolest herringbone pattern in their walkway, made from regular red pavers. It gave me the push I needed to finally lay the last section of my own patio this morning. Has anyone else tried a herringbone layout with standard 4x8 bricks and have tips on keeping the lines straight?

Saw a really smart fire pit setup in a park in Bend, Oregon

They used a circle of those big concrete blocks you can get at any hardware store, but they set them on a bed of crushed gravel about six inches deep. The whole thing was sunk into the ground a bit, so the seating area around it felt really built-in and safe. Has anyone tried a sunken design like that, and did you have to worry about drainage?
