Put 3 inches of gravel under my new shed and it sank 4 inches in one wet week
I built a 10x12 shed in my backyard off Alder Street last spring and figured a gravel pad was the easy part. Dug out the grass, dumped about 3 inches of that cheap $8 a bag pea gravel from the hardware store, tamped it by hand with a 4x4 post, and set the skids on top. First rain after that, the whole thing tilted so bad the door stopped latching. The gravel never locked together because pea gravel is round, so every step I took just pushed the skids down into the mud like it was soup. I yanked it all out, dug 10 inches down, and rented a plate compactor for $65 a day to pack in crushed angular rock in 2 inch lifts. The difference is night and day, that stuff locks up hard as concrete once it's wet and packed. If you're about to pour gravel for anything that holds weight, skip the rounded stuff, it does not hold. Has anyone here used those grid paver things under a shed instead of straight rock, and did they actually keep it from shifting?
