Why does nobody talk about how bad raised beds look after 2 years untreated?
Everyone on here pushes cedar or fancy composite boards for raised beds, but I went cheap with plain pine 2x10s back in spring of 2023 because that is what I could afford. For the first year they looked fine, then last summer I noticed the boards had shrunk up and gaps opened at every corner joint. By this April the sides had bowed out maybe 3 inches and soil was spilling through the seams every time it rained hard here in Omaha. I finally yanked them out last weekend and half the boards crumbled in my hands, so the whole bed cost me $180 and lasted two growing seasons. Everybody says pine rots fast, but what nobody mentions is how ugly the rot looks while it is happening. Has anyone actually gotten 5 plus seasons out of untreated wood, and if so what did you do differently?
