Spent $34 on a fancy silicone bread sling that ripped on the second bake
So I finally caved and bought one of those silicone bread slings with the little handles, the kind everyone on the sourdough forums keeps raving about. Mine cost $34 with shipping from a small shop in Portland, which felt dumb at the time but I talked myself into it because lifting a hot dutch oven with parchment always scared me. First bake it worked okay, kind of floppy but fine. Second bake, the handle just tore right off while I was lowering the dough in, and the whole loaf flopped sideways into the pot. Ruined the shape and I burned my wrist on the lid in the scramble. I went back to crumpled parchment paper that costs like 3 cents a sheet and honestly it does the job better. Your mileage may vary, maybe I got a bad one, but $34 for two uses stings. Has anyone found a sling that actually holds up past a few bakes, or am I just cursed?
That line about the handle tearing right off while lowering the dough is exactly what happened to me, except mine made it four bakes before it gave out. I used to be one of those people who swore the silicone sling was worth the money because parchment always bunched up and made the loaf lopsided. After mine split at the seam I went back to parchment and I swear the crust comes out the same. I just fold a strip with a little handle on each side now and it has never once dumped my bread into the pot.
