TIL the guy next to me at the DMV in Reno paid his $89 registration with a check, and the clerk said they stopped taking those in 2019
I was sitting there waiting for my number to get called last Tuesday and this older guy at the next window pulled out a paper check like it was totally normal. The clerk told him they stopped taking checks back in 2019 and pointed at a small sign taped to the glass. He just stood there confused and asked if he could mail it in instead, and she said cash, card, or money order only. It got me wondering how many people still carry a checkbook out of habit and don't realize most places won't touch them anymore. Has anyone here worked a register or a window where you had to turn down a check, and how did folks usually react?
My grandma did the exact same thing at the grocery store last year. Wrote out a check for like $23 and the poor cashier had to explain three times that they don't take them. She kept saying "but I have money right here" and pointing at the check like it was cash. The cashier was super nice about it but you could tell she'd had this fight a hundred times before. Old habits are hard to break when you've been paying that way for 40 years.
