Straight razor shaves back in 2004 versus now, what a difference

Used to spend 20 minutes honing on a barber hone before every hot towel shave, now I grab a 12k stone and touch up in 5. The new synthetics cut the work in half, but I still miss the ritual of the old setup. Anyone else switch their prep routine after trying those lapping films?
