Bleed kit vs. gravity bleed on old Shimano hydros, and I was wrong about the cheap way

Gravity bleeding a crusty set of SLX brakes took me 45 minutes and still left squish in the lever, but the 20 dollar syringe kit got it brick hard in 10. Anyone else find gravity bleeding is only fine until air hides in the caliper?
