The week a snapped derailleur hanger turned into my best day at the shop
Had a customer roll in on a rainy Wednesday with a snapped derailleur hanger on a 2019 Trek Marlin, and I figured it was just a quick swap till I saw the dropout was bent too. Spent about 90 minutes straightening it with a dropout alignment tool, then realized his chain had 4,000 miles on it and was stretched past 0.75. He said he only rode it to the coffee shop, which did not match the mud caked in his bottom bracket. By the time I was done replacing the hanger, chain, and a toasted cassette, the ticket hit $180 and he did not blink. Then he told three guys at the trailhead about us, and two of them came in that same week for full tunes. I get so used to quick fixes that it's easy to forget a thorough job can bring in more work than any ad. Has anyone else had a small repair snowball into a rush of new customers, or was that just a lucky week?
That bit about the mud caked in his bottom bracket got me, the coffee shop story never matches the bike does it. Had a guy drop off a "barely ridden" Specialized for a tune and the chain was so stretched it was practically a necklace, plus the rear hub bearings were straight gravel. I ended up doing a full drivetrain and repack, took way longer than I quoted, but he was so happy he sent his whole Saturday group ride my way. Three of them booked tunes in one weekend and one bought a new bike from us a month later. Those messy jobs that turn into a chain reaction are the ones that actually keep the lights on.
