That old mason told me to switch to stainless steel flex liners for offset flues and I should've listened sooner

After fighting with a difficult offset job for three hours last Saturday, I finally caved and tried his advice on the next house and it cut the install time in half, so has anyone else found the flex liners worth the extra cost over rigid?

Had a chat with an old TV repair guy that made me rethink my whole approach

Met this guy at a swap meet last Saturday, must have been 70 something. He was selling old CRT parts and we got to talking. I was bragging about my fancy hot air station and how I can swap out BGA chips no problem. He just looked at me and said "you fix with your eyes, I fix with my ears." At first I thought it was just old man talk. But then I got home and had a power supply that was buzzing real faint. I was about to start pulling caps and measuring everything. Instead I just sat there and listened for like 5 minutes. Heard the faintest whine from a transformer. Found a cracked solder joint on its pin that I would have missed visually for hours. Made me wonder how much time I waste looking for problems I could hear first. Any of you guys still troubleshoot by sound or am I just late to the party?

The day I ditched my straight razors for a shavette on walk-ins completely changed my speed.

I used to spend 20 minutes honing and stropping for every neck shave until I grabbed a disposable-blade shavette three months ago and now I'm done in under eight with zero blood, has anyone else made that swap and noticed the same time drop?

Visited a board game cafe last weekend and it changed my mind about modern gaming

I stopped into The Game Parlour in San Francisco last Saturday with my nephew. I figured we'd play some old classics like Scrabble or Uno, but the place was packed with people playing games I had never even heard of. One group was deep into a game called Wingspan, and another table had this huge map with little wooden pieces that turned out to be Scythe. The owner told me there are over 4,000 new board games published every year now. I sat down and tried a game called Cascadia, which is about building habitats for animals, and it was surprisingly fun. Has anyone else had a similar experience where a modern game really surprised you?

Last Saturday was my worst shift in 8 years...

Everything that could go wrong did - three code blues back to back, a patient's family screaming at the front desk, and the coffee machine broke at 2 AM. What made it stand out was the charge nurse just disappeared for an hour to 'take a break' and left us drowning. Has anyone else had a night when management totally bailed on you?

I'm at a small studio in Portland and this woman came in asking for a brow, lip, and full-face wax 2 days before her trip to Hawaii. I warned her about the redness and potential breakouts but she didn't care and said she always does it. How do you guys handle clients who ignore your professional advice on timing?

Changed my mind about those budget brake shoes from Amazon

I used to swear by paying extra for OEM brake shoes on elevators, but after trying a set of $45 Centurion pads on a 10-story model in Austin last month, I'm switching. The stopping felt rough for the first 200 cycles, but once they seated, they actually grabbed smoother than the factory parts. My coworker Dave ran the same set on a 6-stop freight car for 8 months with zero issues. I still spent 2 hours adjusting the backlash compared to 30 minutes with OEM, but saving $120 per unit is hard to ignore. Has anyone else noticed these cheap pads needing a longer break-in period in humid climates?

I wasted a solid 45 minutes trying to figure out if 'cry' was some new fancy beauty treatment or just her Sunday plans until my coworker pointed out it's literally just her venting, has anyone else overthought a celebrity typo like that?

Compared stick welding vs fluxcore on a Friday job in Gary

Had to weld some cracked steel beams at an old mill in Gary last week. Usually I go with stick for outdoor work but decided to try fluxcore for speed. The fluxcore was easier to start but the slag cleanup was way more hassle than I expected. Stick gave me better penetration on the thick beam and I finished faster without chipping between passes. Anyone else find fluxcore slower on thick steel despite the hype?
