Unpopular opinion: I miss when a stuck bottom bracket meant a torch and a prayer, not a $300 tool order
I was working on a 1994 Trek 930 in my buddy's garage in Boise last month and the drive side cup was so seized I bent two shop wrenches trying to break it loose. Back when I started at the co-op there was a guy named Ray who would just hit it with PB Blaster, clamp the frame in a Park stand, and use a 3 foot cheater bar while we all stood back. This time I ended up ordering a $65 cup tool with the splines that actually bite, soaked it overnight, and it popped free with a crack that scared the dog. Anyone else notice the old tricks still beat the new tools half the time? Curious what you all reach for first on a rusted alloy cup in a steel frame.
