Finally finished The Wire after 4 false starts, the payoff was real

I tried The Wire like 4 times over the years, always quit by episode 3. Last month I told myself I'd push through the first season no matter what, even if I was bored. By episode 6 I was hooked. Finished all 5 seasons in 18 days. The last episode wrecked me in a good way. For anyone who bounced off it early, how long did it take you to get into it? I feel like I missed so much by waiting this long.

18 days for all 5 seasons is pretty fast, like you didn't even let the show breathe... but I get it, once it clicks it clicks. Everyone says it's the greatest show ever, but I still think the hype is a little much compared to stuff like Sopranos or Mad Men. It's good, sure, but "wrecked me in a good way" sounds like you're overselling the ending a bit.
