Rewatching with subtitles on feels like a whole different show, argue with me

I started putting subtitles on for a rewatch of an old drama last week and caught so much background dialogue I never noticed. Some people say it ruins the acting, others say it's the only real way to watch. Which side are you on, or do you do something else like watching at 1.5x speed?

Subtitles actually mess with your focus more than you'd think, since your eyes keep jumping down to read instead of watching the actors' faces. I've timed it before, and you miss at least a third of the visual stuff, especially in quick-cut scenes. That said, the extra background chatter is a legit bonus, just don't pretend it's the same experience as watching raw.

A third of the visual stuff? That's wild, I never would've guessed that number, but honestly it does explain why I zone out during Nolan movies with subs on.
