Changed my mind on coal forges after watching a guy in his 70s at a demo in Scranton
I used to be all in on gas. Clean, fast, no fuss, and I'd been running propane for about 6 years without a problem, so I figured coal guys were just being stubborn about tradition. Then I went to a hammer-in near Scranton back in April and watched this older guy run a bottom blast coal forge for 3 hours, and he barely touched the fire once he had it going right. What got me was how he could see the heat by color alone and just shove steel wherever he needed it, no adjusting knobs or waiting on the regulator. He told me 'gas tells you what it wants, coal lets you decide' and I caught myself nodding even though I came in ready to argue. I'm not selling my gas rig, but I picked up a cheap rivet forge at a flea market in June and fired it twice now. Anyone here run both setups, and do you find coal worth the smoke and clinker cleanup for everyday work?
