That old farrier in Ohio told me to slack the quench tank water and I argued for months
Last spring I kept getting stress cracks on 1084 blades, so this farrier who shoes horses near Cincinnati told me to stop quenching in cold water and let the tank sit in the sun until it hit around 100 degrees. I thought he was nuts, figured hot water would ruin the temper, but I tried it on three knives and the cracks stopped completely. Anyone else run their quench tank warmer than the books say, or is that just a horse-shoe thing?
