Warning: a guy at the Columbus forge meet told me to stop quenching in my old bucket, and I'm glad I listened
He watched me pull a 1084 blade out of the same plastic bucket I'd used for 2 years and said the oil was sitting too deep for a proper fast quench. I measured it that weekend: 5 inches of oil in a 12 inch bucket. He told me to use a metal ammo can, warm the oil to 130F, and keep it 3 inches from the top so the blade goes in fast and even. First test blade came out way harder at the edge and I got fewer cracks. Anyone else run a shallow quench tank, and did you notice a real difference in your edge hardness?
