Two days to figure out an outlet cutout, felt like a genius after

Measured the box wrong on a kitchen backsplash in Denver, kept getting this 1/8 inch gap on the top edge. Finally used a scrap piece to template the box and it fit perfect, why did that take me 20 hours of fiddling to realize?

My backyard fence posts kept leaning until I tried a $20 bag of crushed rock

After 3 straight weekends of fixing the same two posts near the creek, I packed the holes with crushed rock instead of cement and they haven't budged, has anyone else had better luck with drainage gravel over concrete in wet soil?

Found out my solder joints were cold the whole time from a thermal camera rental

Got a FLIR One for a weekend job over in Phoenix, just to check some fridge compressor lines. Decided to scan my own board repairs from the last 6 months and wow, about 30 percent were not flowing right into the pads. Could have sworn they looked fine under my loupe. Anyone else ever catch their own work with a thermal cam and feel that gut drop? What did you change after seeing it?

The annotated version made me eat my words about classics

I always thought footnotes were lazy cheating until our club did The Great Gatsby with the Norton edition last month. The history notes on prohibition and the parties in chapter 3 finally made the story click for me. Anyone else changed their mind after trying an annotated copy?

Hot towel or cold towel after a skin fade, I side with cold now

I used to do the hot towel thing on every client finishing a skin fade. Thought it opened pores and made the shave look cleaner. Saw the difference side by side on two guys last month. Hot side looked red and puffy for an hour. Cold side looked tight and calm right off the chair. Switched my whole Saturday flow to cold towels on the back of the neck and the fade line. Any other barbers make that change after seeing it up close, or am I overthinking this?

Last week I accepted a paid shoutout from a wellness influencer with 200k followers. Before posting, I dug into her engagement and saw 90% of comments were bots from the Philippines. I quietly deleted my drafted post and sent the brand screenshots. Now their PR person keeps calling me a 'liability' because they already paid her. That remark about under-delivery flipped my stance on viewability

I used to think viewability was just a vanity number until I overheard a media buyer at a coffee shop say they renegotiate every campaign that drops below 70% on mobile. I went back and pulled my last quarter's reports, realized I had lost roughly $900 on ads nobody actually saw. Has anyone else started using viewability as a hard pass/fail for new placements, or am I overcorrecting?

My neighbor's fence repair took 6 weeks and I need a second opinion

Last month my neighbor and I split the cost to replace the shared fence between our places on 182nd St. He hired his cousin who quoted us $1,800 total, said it would take a weekend. Six weeks later the thing is still not done, the gate swings open on its own, and the wood already looks warped in two spots. My neighbor keeps saying give it time, but I paid $900 cash up front and have nothing in writing. I walked over with a tape measure last Tuesday and the posts are only 5 feet apart while every other fence on the block is 6. Has anyone dealt with a half-finished shared fence or know who I can call to inspect it without wrecking the relationship?

Getting directions used to mean a gas station and a paper map

I remember driving from Phoenix to Flagstaff back in '04, no GPS, just a folded map I kept under the seat. You'd pull into a Circle K and ask the cashier, who always knew the shortcuts that the map didn't show, like that one turn near Camp Verde that saved you 20 minutes. Now I just punch an address into my phone and it reroutes around traffic without me asking, which is nice but also kind of weird. The change really hit me about 5 years ago when my buddy's kid asked why we used to talk to strangers for directions, and I couldn't give him a good answer. I still keep a physical map in my truck for when I'm on a job site with no signal, but it's mostly a backup these days. Anyone else still grab paper maps for long trips, or am I the only one who misses the randomness of getting lost a little?

That ranger's shortcut advice cost us 2 days near Eagle Cap

Man, that brings back a memory. I once had a ranger in the Cascades tell me the "fisherman's trail" along a creek would be flat and easy. Turned out it was basically a goat path that disappeared every quarter mile, and we ended up bushwhacking through alder thickets for six hours. The only water we found was a puddle that had a dead marmot in it. We still joke about that ranger's "shortcut" like it's a war story. Rangers mean well, but they've probably hiked those trails in dry boots with fresh legs and a map that's older than they are. Your scree slope story is way worse though, at least my knee held up. Hope your partner's doing alright now.

Three days on the same buzz is brutal, man, I feel for you. That trick where the fix gets credited to the part but really it was the reflow is real, I've been burned by that exact thing. Either way, you got the bird quiet and that's all that matters in the end.

Went through my old tweets from 2011 and found a canceled-era time capsule

Man it's wild how we're all basically walking around with our dumbest moments archived forever now. I leave my old crap up though, feels like a badge of honor to see how much you've grown, but yeah it's a trip how one bad take from 2011 can haunt you worse than a parking ticket.

Adhesive trowel notch direction makes a bigger difference than I thought

The "zero transfer on one side" part is what got me. That means your thinset was pulling off the substrate, not the tile. I've seen guys blame bad thinset or cold slab for that, but its usually a mechanical issue. What I haven't seen anyone mention is that it matters more with big tiles and deep notches. A 1/2 inch trowel pushed parallel to the seam leaves these long unbroken glue valleys, so the tile only touches the high spots. Perpendicular breaks those valleys up so the tile can actually squish down and grab everywhere. That bedroom floor probably would have failed in a year. Good catch.

Wait till you look up the guy from that old "Cash Me Outside" meme and realize she's been sitting on millions of views with no disclaimer attached. It's like YouTube's version of "finders keepers, losers weepers" but the "losers" are actual victims. I half expect to see a sponsored ad roll before a video of some guy who got convicted for fraud. Guess money really does have no memory, huh?
