Am I the only one who lost a whole game of Ticket to Ride because of one station rule?

Played at my buddy's place in Sacramento last Friday and spent 45 minutes planning a perfect 6-train route from LA to Miami before my friend pointed out I had the station rule wrong. Turns out stations let you borrow ONE route, not swap whole paths, and I had been building around a rule that doesn't exist. We pulled up the rulebook on page 4 and I just sat there staring at my useless little train pile. How long did it take you all to stop misplaying a rule you were sure about?
