Got crushed in Splendor 4 times at my FLGS in Boise before I figured out what I was doing wrong
I kept hoarding gem tokens every game thinking more cards equals more points, and a guy named Dave finally asked me why I had 10 tokens sitting in front of me doing nothing. Turns out you cap at 10 and I was blocking my own buys while he grabbed all the cheap tier one nobles by turn 6. Took me four straight losses at the Tuesday night meetup at All About Games to see that engine building beats hoarding, which feels obvious now. Anyone else have a habit they had to unlearn the hard way?
Dave sounds like half the people at my Tuesday game night, they just let you keep making the mistake until the score sheet makes it obvious. The token cap thing gets almost everyone at first, but the deeper issue is that new players treat Splendor like a shopping game when it is really a race. Every token sitting in front of you is a turn you did not spend buying, and those cheap tier one cards are how you win the race, not the fancy tier three stuff.
My bad habit was different though. I used to reserve cards way too early because they looked shiny, then I would sit on three reserved cards all game and never build toward anything. Took me losing to the same lady named Carol like five times before I stopped doing that. Now I only reserve if it takes a card away from somebody who is about to win or if I can actually afford it soon.
