Passed on a $5 copy of El Grande at a garage sale in 2019, and I still think about it
Back in 2019 I was at a garage sale in Fresno and this guy had a stack of board games on a folding table, all five bucks each. The one that caught my eye was El Grande, which had been on my want list for a while, but sitting right next to it was a beat up copy of Catan with half the cards rubber banded together. I only had a ten on me and the guy would not break it, so I had to pick one. I went with Catan because my group already knew the rules and I figured it would hit the table that same weekend, and honestly it did, we played it maybe twenty times that summer. El Grande guy sold the whole stack to somebody else ten minutes later and I watched it happen from my car. Five years later my group has moved way past Catan and I keep seeing El Grande come up as a classic area control pick, which is exactly the kind of game we play now. Every time I see it on a shelf I do the math on what that box would cost me today, and it is not five dollars. Did I mess up, or is El Grande one of those games that sounds better than it actually plays?
