Warning: I tried using a cheap post hole digger from a big box store for a job in Phoenix

I had a big job out in Phoenix last month, about 200 feet of fence line on hard, dry ground. I grabbed one of those two-handle manual post hole diggers from the local hardware chain because it was only $30. After about six holes, my arms were done. The handles felt flimsy and the blades just scraped the dirt. I switched to the heavy-duty, solid steel one I keep in my truck, the one that cost me $120. The weight alone helped it punch through the caliche layer, and the sharpened blades actually cut and lifted the soil. The difference in speed and how tired I got was night and day. That cheap tool cost me more in time and effort than it saved in money. What's your go-to tool for rocky or super hard soil?

Update: Saw a guy at the parts store trying to use a 3/8 impact on a crank bolt.

This keeps happening. People think the biggest tool is the right tool. That crank bolt needs a 1/2 inch drive, minimum. I saw the guy at the O'Reilly's on 5th last week. He was buying a new socket because he rounded the old one off. He told me, 'It just wouldn't budge.' Of course it didn't. You're gonna break the anvil in that impact before you even crack the bolt loose. I've had to extract three of those this month alone from DIYers who tried the same thing. It's a simple thing, but using the wrong drive size just costs you more money and time. What's the most stubborn bolt you've had to convince someone they needed the right tool for?

Honestly, I thought it was just hangar talk until I saw a guy at the MRO in Phoenix use a Sharpie on the drive square to spot-check for movement under load. I finally tried a new aging rack setup for my dry-aged ribeyes

Built a custom rack with more airflow, thinking it would speed up the process for a big order from The Oak Room. After 45 days, the pellicle was way too thick and I lost nearly 40% to trim, which killed my margin. Learned that more airflow isn't always better for a standard 30-45 day age. Pro tip: skipping the John Muir Trail permit lottery might actually be a good move

Everyone says you have to win the JMT lottery for a good trip, but last August I just walked up and got a walk-up permit for the High Sierra Trail instead. It was way less crowded, the views were just as epic, and I didn't have to plan my whole year around a lottery date. Has anyone else found a classic alternative that worked better for them?

I used to think a torque wrench was just for the big bolts until a job in Boise.

I was doing a quick turn on a King Air in Idaho, and the cowling started rattling like crazy after takeoff because I'd just hand-tightened the small fasteners. We had to turn back, and I found three of them had worked loose, which was a real eye-opener. What's the smallest fastener you guys actually break out the torque wrench for?

Vent: My flight to Lisbon got rerouted and I ended up saving $300

I was flying from Chicago to Lisbon last fall, and a huge storm canceled my direct flight. The airline put me on a new route with a 9-hour layover in Madrid. I was so annoyed, but I used the Skyscanner app to check prices from Madrid to Lisbon while I was stuck there. A local bus company had a route for only 22 euros, so I canceled the second flight leg, got a refund for that segment, and took the bus. It added 4 hours to my trip, but I saved a ton of money.
