Blew a gasket on a 40 foot water wall in Pittsburgh, learned a trick about thread sealant

We were doing a header swap on an old boiler downtown and the new gasket kept shifting no matter how I held it. Took a break, came back and smeared a thin layer of pipe dope on the gasket face to hold it in place, worked like a charm. Anyone else use dope that way or is there a better trick for keeping gaskets seated on tall vertical runs?
