Vent: A welder on a job in Duluth said something about my rigging that stuck with me

We were setting a 12-foot section of 8-inch pipe, and I was about to choke it with a single sling like I always do. He just said, 'Try basket hitching it... spreads the load, less chance of a crush.' I did, and the whole lift felt smoother, with way less swing. Do you guys have a go-to rigging trick that seems simple but makes a huge difference?

That's interesting, but sometimes the old way is the old way for a reason. A single choke is faster to set up and break down, which matters on a tight schedule. For a straight piece of pipe, a proper choke holds it tight and stops it from spinning. The basket can let it slide if the angle isn't perfect. Sure, it spreads the load, but on an 8-inch pipe, that crush risk is pretty low if your sling is rated right. Speed and a secure hold often beat a slightly smoother lift.

Nah, gotta disagree. That smoother lift means better control, period. A little extra setup time is worth not fighting a swinging pipe.

Ever seen a basket hitch slip on a greasy pipe?
