Dropped $140 on a brass backing hammer and it fixed my rounded spines overnight
I bind paperbacks mostly, and for two years I was rounding spines with a cheap rubber mallet from the hardware store. It worked okay but the spines always looked a little lumpy and I could never get that nice even curve. Last spring I finally caved and bought a proper brass backing hammer from a supplier in Portland for $140 shipped. First book I tried it on, a 300 page rebind, the spine came out so clean I actually sat there staring at it. The weight of the brass does most of the work, so you tap instead of swing, and the head doesn't bounce back on you like rubber does. My mallet is now a paperweight on my desk. If you're still using rubber or a regular ball peen, the brass one is worth saving for. Anyone here using a French style backing hammer instead? Curious if the shape makes much difference on thinner signatures.
