Purple deadnettle took over my whole garden bed in 3 days

I've been tending this little patch behind my garage in Columbus for about 5 years now and last spring I turned my back for a weekend. Boom, purple deadnettle everywhere, like a carpet. I figured I'd pull it out in an afternoon but each root snapped off and left little bits behind that just regrew. Took me three solid weekends of digging with a hori hori knife and finally just dumping a tarp over the whole bed for 10 days to smother it. I probably pulled out 40 grocery bags of weed material total. The soil still has some stray sprouts popping up when it rains heavy, anyone else had this kind of fight with deadnettle or am I just unlucky with how deep it seeds?
