Unpopular opinion: I think the whole 'rare plant' craze is making botany feel like a competition

Last week at the Portland plant swap, I saw a guy trade a cutting of his Monstera Albo for over $200 in other plants. Three years ago, this same event was just people sharing common pothos and spider plants from their backyards. It felt like a community, not a marketplace. Has anyone else noticed their local plant groups getting way more focused on value than just growing things?

Totally get that feeling, it's a real bummer. The vibe has definitely shifted from sharing to showing off. Miss when it was just about the plants.

But it's also funding conservation efforts, so there's that.

Used to hate that side of it too. The money going to good places is the only thing that makes it okay now.
