Update: my monstera's aerial roots were reaching for the wall, not water

I spent 2 months misting the thing every morning and googling root rot, until a guy at the Tucson botanical garden pointed out aerial roots just wanna climb something, they don't want a drink. Stuck a $6 moss pole in the pot last Tuesday and it latched on in like 4 days. Anyone else figure this out the hard way or did I just waste two months of my life?
