Took me 4 hours to figure out why my corner bricks kept popping, and the answer was a $3 tool
Honestly I felt like an idiot. I was laying the front corner of a porch column on a job in Dayton and every brick at the corner kept popping loose about an inch after I set it. Turns out my trowel was worn so flat in the middle that my mortar bed was thin at the corner and thick in the middle, so it never grabbed. I grabbed a new trowel off the truck, redid that one column, and every brick sat dead flat first try. Has anyone else had a worn trowel sneak up on them like that without noticing?
